About

High Tide

High Tide is a log cabin-style lodge equipped with pretty much everything you could possibly need for your stay. It is cosy enough to be the perfect couple's retreat but also large enough to accommodate 4 adults and 2 children. Comfort, warmth and lovely views are all part of the package.

High Tide is fully furnished to Visit England 4* standard, with everything you require to make it a perfect home away from home and an ideal base for a relaxing and enjoyable coastal holiday. As mentioned above, High Tide has bed space for 6, but the living space might feel a little too cosy for 6 grown-up human beings, especially in 'typically Cornish' weather. 4 adults and 2 children would be fine and 6 adults who get on particularly well might be happy enough for a couple of nights. I prefer to be absolutely honest about this, rather than cause anyone to be disappointed with their stay at our lovely lodge.

High Tide is positioned at the top of a group of 11 similar holiday lodges on The Rame Peninsula at historic Whitsand Bay Fort. The Fort is a holiday park with lodges and caravan/camping facilities arranged on the clifftop around the remains of a Victorian military battery, protected by English Heritage. Our group of lodges are tucked away out of sight of the rest of the park, giving it a much more private and exclusive feel. We are separated by a tall bank from the caravan and camping site which nestles between the ramparts of the fort.

There are far-reaching, off-set sea views from the front decking and views over to Plymouth and Dartmoor beyond from the side decking. The city views are particularly impressive at night, with the twinkling lights of the city in the distance. The lodge has its own private parking space within a few metres of the property (a big advantage compared to most of the lodges at Whitsand Bay Fort where you have to park some distance away and carry your bags to your lodge). It faces south west and as such enjoys sun to the front decking, lounge, kitchen and dining area from dawn til dusk whilst the side decking enjoys the sun from dawn til mid-afternoon.

The wondrous Whitsand Bay beach, one of the best kept secrets of this hidden part of Cornwall, with its broad sweeps of gently sloping sand is just a 5 minute walk down the cliff-not exactly a stroll down as it is a cliff, so there are some uneven steps to negotiate part of the way and it does take longer on the way back up but you can reward yourself with a well-earned cuppa on your decking! (Please note that beach access is very limited when the tide is high - but it's worth the wait and definitely worth planning your day around the tide timetable!)

The well-served village of Millbrook has a small supermarket (Co-op), a doctor's surgery and a range of other shops, cafes and pubs. The bar Devon & Cornwall Inn is particularly atmospheric and authentic - or at least we think so!

The National Trust properties of Antony, Lanhydrock and Cotehele are all within easy striking distance, as are the historic fishing ports of Looe and Polperro.

High Tide is ideally located for weddings at Whitsand Bay Fort (on site) and the nearby wedding venue at Polhawn Fort and for passing out parades at HMS Raleigh. Whitsand Bay Fort is a very popular wedding venue, with its unique, historic, clifftop site, especially on Saturdays (occasionally also on Wednesdays) in the busy summer season. The park is busier than usual on those days, so guests should expect more general hubbub on 'wedding' days, although none of it is visible from High Tide itself. The camping and caravan site on the park is also full to capacity in the summer season, just like every other similar site along this beautiful coastline. If you're seeking total peace and quiet and glorious isolation, this probably isn't the place for you, especially in peak holiday periods.
